Child ADHD Assessments
At Brave Little Heroes Psychology Hub, we understand the importance of a thorough and compassionate approach to diagnosing ADHD in children. Our ADHD assessment process is designed to explore a child’s behaviour, developmental history, and unique experiences through collaborative interviews with the child, parents, and other professionals.
What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can present symptoms before the age of 12 and, in some cases, as early as 3 years old. Common symptoms include:
• Inattention – Difficulty concentrating or completing tasks.• Impulsivity – Frequently interrupting others or acting without thinking.• Hyperactivity – Constant motion or inability to stay seated.
While some children may exhibit hyperactive, inattentive, or impulsive behaviours, not all will meet the criteria for ADHD. We carefully differentiate between typical behaviour and ADHD to ensure an accurate diagnosis.
Our ADHD Assessment Process
Our assessment considers several critical factors, including whether the behaviours are persistent and occur across multiple settings (e.g., home, school). We use a comprehensive and evidence-based approach to evaluate your child’s needs:
1. Interviews and Observations Conducted with the child, parents, and other key professionals (e.g., teachers).2. Behavioural and Developmental History Gathered using ADHD rating scales and screening tools.3. Clinical Comparison to Diagnostic Criteria Assessments are compared to standardized criteria for ADHD to rule out other potential causes such as learning difficulties, mood disorders, or medical issues.
What’s Included in Our ADHD Assessment Package?
Our ADHD assessment is suitable for children aged 6 to 18 years and is conducted over 4 sessions with a qualified psychologist. This comprehensive package includes:
• 3 x 1-hour sessions: Interviews, observations, and discussions with parents and other professionals.• Administration of ADHD rating scales and screening tests.• A detailed interpretive report: Outlining the findings and tailored recommendations for support and intervention.• 1 x 1-hour feedback session: A written report is presented and discussed with parents.

Autism
Brave Little Heroes Psychology Hub offers early intervention, counselling, social skills training, and assessment for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.
Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder often face social challenges that affect their ability to function well at home and school. These challenges can include:
- Engaging in back-and-forth conversations
- Initiating interactions with others
- Making or maintaining eye contact
- Sharing interests with others
- Understanding and developing friendships
- Interpreting facial expressions and body language
Children with autism may also exhibit restricted behaviours or repetitive patterns of behaviour, such as:
- Lining up toys
- Being preoccupied with specific objects, toys, or interests
- Playing with parts of objects instead of the whole (e.g., spinning the wheels of a toy)
- Echoing others' speech
- Struggling with transitions or changes in their daily routine
- Experiencing sensory sensitivities (e.g., to noise, touch, texture)
- Displaying mannerisms like flapping, rocking, or toe-walking
Early intervention services are crucial for the social, emotional, and behavioural development of children with autism.
Brave Little Heroes Psychology Hub offers in-clinic sessions, school consultations, and Telehealth (phone and video consultations). Funding options include NDIS, Medicare, and Private Health Insurance.
How We Can HelpSince autism is diagnosed on a spectrum, two children may have the same diagnosis but present differently and require different levels of support at school and home.
Brave Little Heroes Psychology Hub provides parents in Melbourne with autism support and education, as well as therapy tailored to the specific needs of the child. This includes developing play skills, social skills training, emotional development, and behaviour management.
We believe in a collaborative approach where the psychologist, speech pathologist, or occupational therapist works together with other professionals supporting the child, including the child’s paediatrician, teacher, or GP.
Booking in to See Our Qualified Therapists is Simple:
- Call us today to make an appointment at 03 9917 7885. You don’t need a referral from a GP – call us for a chat, and we’ll assess whether your child may benefit from our services.
- Meet with our therapists for an assessment. Our Melbourne team will meet with you and your child to identify their individual needs and outline specific strategies and goals for their development.
- We’ll develop a therapy plan that meets your child’s needs. Each child with autism can present differently and may have different strengths and areas that require support. In collaboration with you and your child, we will determine the focus areas for therapy and identify the best professionals to support you (e.g., psychologist, speech pathologist, occupational therapist). We incorporate play, art, and engaging activities to encourage your child’s participation in therapy, along with practical tools and strategies that can be practiced at home and school.
